Sant Joan ist der katalanische Name des Heiligen Johannes: Wenn die Sonne tanzt und der Sommer beginnt, feiert man in Spanien das Fest des heiligen Johannes des Täufers - das Fest Sant Joan bzw. San Juan (spanisch). In der Nacht vom 23. auf den 24. Juni werden zah- lreiche Lagerfeuer und Feuerwerke gezündet. Traditionell feiert man die ganze Nacht bis zum Sonnenaufgang am Strand. Hexen und böse Geister werden mit dem Feuer um 24.00 Uhr vertrieben. Die kürzeste Nacht des Sommers - die Johannisnacht – galt früher viele- rorts als magisch und der Hexerei verschrieben.
Heute gilt San Juan als fröhliches Fest, das dem Sommer die Türen öffnet. Wenn man das Fest gemeinsam mit katalanischen Freunden feiert, dann sollte man vorher kleine Zettel schreiben. Auf einem no- tiert man die schlechten Dinge des letzten Jahres, auf einen anderen schreibt man seine persönlichen Wünsche für das neue Sonnenjahr. Um Mitternacht wirft man zuerst die schlechten Erlebnisse ins Feuer, um dann anschließend seine Wunschträume dem Feuergeist zu über- geben. Ab Mitternacht beginnt überall das Feuerwerk. Wie an Sil- vester in Nordeuropa, feuert man Knaller und Raketen ab. Der berüh- mte Feuerzauber in Alicante geht auf einen uralten Brauch zurück: Zur Sommersonnenwende wurden unbrauchbare Gegenstände auf großen Scheiterhaufen verbrannt. Das war der Ursprung des farben- frohen und feurigen Treibens, das sich um den Feiertag Johannes des Täufers herum entwickelte und heute Touristen aus aller Welt anzieht. Hier an der Costa Brava sind die Strände der Küstenorte perfekt, um die nächtliche Feuerkunst am Himmel über dem Mittel- meer zu bewundern. Bis in den frühen Morgen spielen Bands, und man tanzt durch die Nacht. Ein wenig Wehmut ist schon dabei: Ab jetzt werden die Tage wieder kürzer. Genießen wir gemeinsam die Sommerzeit am Mittelmeer.

When the sun is dancing and the summer is about to start, it is time to celebrate the festival of Saint John the Baptist – the festival of Sant Joan (cat). At night, when June 23rd becomes June 24th, the bon res and reworks are lit. Traditionally, the festival lasts until the early hours of the morning, until the sun can be seen rising on the beach. The re, so is the saying, puts witches and evil ghosts to ight.
In the past, the shortest night of the summer - in some regions also called Night of John - has often been regarded as something magical unto committed to evil witchcraft even. Even today, there is still something magical to St John’s festival, and for some it is the threshold to summer. En España, con la llegada del verano se celebra la esta de San Juan. La noche del 23 al 24 de junio arden numerosas hogueras y se ven fuegos arti ciales por doquier. La tradición manda festejar en la playa hasta el amanecer. El fuego ahuyenta las brujas y los malos espíritus a las 00:00h en punto. Antaño, la noche de San Juan, la más corta del verano, presumía de ser mágica y de pertenecer al mundo de la brujería. Hoy San Juan es una esta feliz que abre las puertas al verano.
Si se celebra San Juan con amigos catalanes, se debería escribir en dos trozos de papel todo lo malo que nos ha ocurrido el año pasado y, por otro lado, los deseos para el nuevo año solar. A medianoche se lanzan al fuego; primero, los malos sucesos y después, los deseos. A partir de las 00:00h todo son fuegos arti ciales, como San Silvestre en Europa del norte.
En Alicante, esta magia del fuego se remonta a una costumbre muy antigua, y cuentan que para el solsticio de verano quemaban todos los objetos viejos o inservibles en grandes hogueras. De ahí que el fuego queme con tantos colores y con tanta fuerza y que ahora, San Juan, atraiga a tantísimos turistas procedentes de todo el mundo. Aquí en la Costa Brava la playa de Empuriabrava es un buen lugar para admirar el arte del fuego sobre el Mediterráneo. Hay grupos de música que tocan hasta bien entrada la madrugada. Un poco de melancolía sí que se respira... al n y al cabo, a partir de ahora los días se acortan. Pero de momento, disfrutemos juntos del verano en el Mediterráneo.

As on New Year’s eve in northern Europe, re crackers and other reworks are red off. The enchanting reworks in Alicante trace back to an ancient rite: at solstice, old artefacts that were no longer of any use would be burned on a huge stake. This was the beginning of the colourful, ery festival which developed around St John’s day. Today the fes- tival is a real crowd puller for tourist from all over the world. Here in the Costa Brava, the harbour of Roses is an excellent place to admire the reworks in the sky above the Mediterranean. Bands are playing until dawn and you can dance all night long. There is a tiny bit of melancholy to all of it, though – henceforth the days will grow shorter again. Let us enjoy the summer at the Mediterranean beaches – while we can.
