Many exhibitions of and blessings for horses took place in this spring throughout various Catalan villages and towns. One of these towns was Sant Pere Pescador, where the blessing of horses has a long tra- dition. Innumerable riders came clad in fancy riding dresses, riding down the roads and to either the church or Placa Major in order to honor San Antón. The procession was accompanied by a number of carriages and donkeys, all of them looking the best for the state occa- sion. San Antonio Abad, usually known as San Antón was born 251 in Egypt. There, he spent most of his live praying and fasting in the desert. Often was he led near temptation and the devil, grimacing, is said to have been a common visitor, albeit in dreams. Sometimes the devil would appear taking on the shape of a lady. But San Antón re- sisted and became the patron saint of pets and all domestic animals. These days, the nest horses are splashed with bits of holy water in memory of San Antón. The riders, too, do not have to starve or suffer thirst – they are offered special pastries (buñuelos) and wine from the villages’ shops and pubs. In San Pere Pescador, the blessing of horses is traditionally taking place on the Placa Major. This year, the sky was clear and blue and riders and guests seized the beautiful day and met in the park near a river for a bit of a show, games and dance. It was a fantastic spring fair for locals and tourists alike.

C’était une mer- veilleuse fête de printemps réunissant aussi bien Catalans que touristes.
