Sailors brought the Habaneras from Cuba to Spain, in particular to the Basque, Galician and Catalan coasts, in the second half of the 18th century.
For 50 years, the best Habanera groups of Catalonia have been meeting on the rst Saturday of September, in a small bay close to the harbour of Calella. When the sun has set over the sea, the real event takes place. The Cantada from Calella de Palafrugell started in 1966 when a group of singers met in Can Batlle tavern. The initiative came from Francesc Alsius, Frederic Martí and Joan Pericot and coincided with the presentation of the book “Calella de Palafrugell i les havaneres”, the second collection of habaneras which was published across Catalonia. The next year, the success of the event led organizers to repeat it and set up a more formal Cantada on the beach of Calella de Palafrugell.

La Cantada de Calella de Palafrugell a démarré en 1966 à l’occasion d’une rencontre de chanteurs dans la taverne de Can Batlle. Ce fut une initiative de Francesc Alsius, Frederic Martí et Joan Pericot qui coïncida avec la présentation du livre « Calella de Palafrugell i les havaneres» (Calella de Palafrugell et les havaneres), le deuxième recueil d’hava- neres publié en Catalogne. L’année suivante, le succès de la rencontre amena les organisateurs à répéter l’acte et à réaliser un récital plus formel sur la plage de Calella de Palafrugell.
