the major writers still alive. A wonderful Christmas present would be his novel “The way to paradise”, original title “El Paraíso en la otra esquina“. The two protagonists of the story – Flora Tristán and Paul Gauguin – are closely connected to the historical personalities of the same name. Flora Tristán (1803-1844), descendant of Peruvian nobility, was born into poverty at France and did not only experience the affliction of the exploited and oppressed weak gender in her own biography during the outset of the industrial revolution. Travelling through England, Peru and France she explored the bottom milieu of the society and advanced into a fervid revolutio-nary for the rights of womankind and la-bour. In several books she dealt with her experiences and formulated a vision of a solidary and fair community, whose circulation she worked on unresting until she died of exhaustion. Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), grandson of Flora Tristán, in contrast, early escaped from social bondages signing on a merchant ship, only returning after a half around the world trip into the bourgeois life of a stockbroker. Several years later he again turned his back onto that, this time in fa-vour of his late discovered passion: painting. In rural France, on the island of the South Seas and on his canvas he se-arched for the lost paradise of a society living out their natural instincts and not being corrupted by modern life. Just as Flora Tristán he never found his paradise in lifetime and died half blind and criti-cally ill at the back of beyond. Christmas, a festive day full of visions and promises of salvation, holds a good occasion to engage closely with these personalities – standing for well and truly

After last year’s huge success, Sons del Món again offers a high-quality program at two ex-

citing locations in 2011. Some concerts and dinners take place in the ancient gardens of the ro-mantic convent Santa Maria in Vilabertran (near Figueres), ano-ther part in the spectacular cita-del of Roses.

After the necessary internet re-gistration (www.sonsdelmon. cat) the festival visitor can frst enjoy a delicious dinner served by selected restaurants from the Empordà. Sponsored by Estrel-

la Inedit Damm, the organizers rely on a mix of young chefs and old established restaurants inclu-ding Amiel Molins, Mas Concas and Die Insel. Roses especially promotes its long tradition as a fshing village. The fve dinners are each followed by a concert - not just any concert! The festi-val’s program includes some of the biggest names from the Cata-lan and the international music scene. The opening concert is

performed in Vilabertran on July 1st by Mishima and Santi Balmes (singer of Love of Lesbian), two of the best indie voices in the country, who both started their careers in Barcelona . Tomeu Penya, a popular singer from Mallorca, follows on July 9th. The citadel of Roses is rocked on July 16th by Manel, who are sel-ling more albums than any other current band - unfortunately the tickets for this concert were sold out after a few hours.

However, there are still tickets available for Julieta Venegas, a world-renowned singer-songwri-ter from Mexico, who performs her only concert in Catalonia in the citadel on July 22nd. The grand fnale will be a concert of Miguel Poveda, who recently received the National Culture Award and is nationwide suc-cessful with his album «Coplas del Querer». Many people also know his music from the soundtrack of Pedro Almodóvar’s «Broken Embraces» (2009). The suitable wine to the music is delivered by Roger Viusà, one of the best sommeliers of Europe. Of course all the offered wines origi-nate from the Empordà. The menus for 15 to 20 euros are served at 21 o’clock. The concerts always begin at 22:30 o’clock, tickets cost between 12 and 30 euros.
