At night, when June 23rd becomes June 24th, the bonfres and freworks are lit. Traditionally, the festival lasts until the early hours of the mor-ning, until the sun can be seen rising on the beach. The fre, so is the saying, puts witches and evil ghosts to fight. In the past, the shor-test night of the summer - in some regions also calledNight of John - has often been regarded as something magical unto committed to evil witchcraft even.

It was much later that the Catholics entered this special day six months after Christmas in the books. It was thenceforward called St John’s Day. There is a passage in the Bible, hinting that John the Baptist was born six months later than Jesus. Even today, there is still something magical to St John’s festival, and for some it is the threshold to summer.

Lorsque le soleil danse et que l’été commence, on célèbre en Espagne la fête de la Saint-Jean. Dans la nuit du 23 au 24 juin, de nom-breux feux de joie et de feux d’artifces sont allumés. On fait la fête traditionnel-lement toute la nuit sur la plage jusqu’au lever du soleil.

Sorcières et mauvais esprits sont chassés par le feu autour de minuit.

La nuit la plus courte de l’été – la nuit de la Saint-Jean – passait jadis en bien des lieux pour une nuit emprunte de magie et dédiée à la sorcellerie.

L’église catholique inscrivit ce jour de la Saint-Jean dans le calendrier de l’Eglise six mois après Noël. En effet, il est écrit dans la Bible que Jean était né six mois après le Christ.

Aujourd’hui, la Sant Joan est une fête magique qui annonce le début de l’été. Lorsque l’on célèbre cette fête avec des amis catalans, il faut procéder à un petit rituel. On écrit sur un petit bout de pa-pier tout ce qui s’est produit de négatif

As on New Year’s eve in northern Europe, fre crackers and other freworks are fred off.

The enchanting freworks in Alicante trace back to an ancient rite: at solstice, old arte-facts that were no longer of any use would be burned on a huge stake. This was the be-ginning of the colourful, fery festival which developed around St John’s day. Today the festival is a real crowd puller for tourist from all over the world.

Here in the Costa Brava, the harbour of Roses is an excellent place to admire the freworks in the sky above the Mediterranean. Bands are playing until dawn and you can dance all night long. There is a tiny bit of melancholy to all of it, though – henceforth the days will grow shorter again. Let us enjoy the summer at the Mediterranean beaches – while we can.

Instaurée formellement en 1928, cette tradition des feux de la Saint-Jean attire désormais des touristes du monde entier.

Ici sur la Costa Brava, le port de Roses est un bon emplacement pour admirer les feux nocturnes dans le ciel méditer-ranéen. Des groupes jouent et l’on peut danser jusqu’au petit matin. La mélan-colie vous gagne un peu : les jours vont être plus courts. Proftez de l’été en Mé-diterranée !
