The “Tomatina” is held on the last
Wednesday in August in the town
of Buñol. This unusual festa brings
together crowds of people every
year, ready to have a great time of
laugher and fun, hurling tomatoes
at each other. Participants at this
joyful pitched battle have a won-
derful time throwing tomatoes at
anything that moves.
It gets underway at 9am, in the
town square, with rolls and pas-
tries provided for breakfast by the
Town Hall. Little by little, the square
flls with people. Before the bat-
tle, a huge pole is erected. It is
covered with soap and has a leg
of ham on the end. The most dar-
ing try to climb as high as possible
to get their hands on the prize, to
the general delight of onlookers.
Meanwhile, buckets of water are
launched from balconies, soaking
the people as they prepare for bat-
tle. At 11 o’clock a shot is fred

« bataille » de tomates re-
monte à une dispute juvénile sur-
venue en 1945. Depuis lors, elle
n’a jamais cessé de se tenir. Le der-
nier mercredi du mois d’août, c’est
dans la localité de Buñol que se
tient la « Tomatina ». Cette fête sin-
gulière rassemble chaque année
une foule de personnes prêtes à
passer un grand moment de rires
et de divertissement, à coup de to-
mates. Dans cette joyeuse bataille
rangée, les participants s’amusent
comme des enfants à lancer des
tomates sur tous ceux qu’ils croisent
sur leur chemin.
La journée commence à 9 heures
du matin, sur la place du village, où
l’on prend des forces avec les vien-
noiseries distribuées par la mairie.
Peu à peu, les lieux commencent à
se remplir de gens. Avant le com-
bat, on érige un grand mât couvert
de savon, à l’extrémité duquel on
place un jambon. Les plus intré-
pides tentent de grimper au plus
haut pour remporter le prix, dans

washing down the brave partici-
pants with hoses – they are already
thinking of next years “Tomatina”.

de la bataille ; au fond de la rue,
apparaît le premier camion char-
gé de « munitions », annonçant
son arrivée à coups de klaxon.
Ceux qui sont grimpés dans la re-
morque commencent à lancer les
premières tomates. Finalement, le
véhicule s’arrête et libère son char-
gement : la foule se lance alors
pour s’approvisionner en « balles »,
et en quelques secondes, les lieux
se teintent de rouge. L’un après
l’autre, arrivent des camions rem-
plis de tomates, jusqu’au retentisse-
ment du second coup de feu signa-
lant la fn de la bataille. C’est alors
que commence la dure tâche de
nettoyer au jet d’eau les courageux
participants, qui pensent déjà à la
prochaine Tomatina.
