In the 16th century, the Cath-
olic Church decided it was
about time to give an impressing
lesson about the Sufferings of
Christ. Well-known artists were
told to manufacture wooden fig-
urines and they dressed them in
noble silks and carried them down
the streets in long processions.
The original idea, heavily influ-
enced by the inquisition, was to
bring those that had gone astray
back to the Church.
The Spanish Holy Week, also
known as Semana Santa, is a re-
ligious folk festival these days. It
starts with Palm Sunday and ends
Saturday night, before Easter Sun-
day.
Pagan rites for welcoming spring,
Christian grief about the Suffer-
ings of Christ and mere happiness
about his resurrection are all in-
tertwined in processions and im-
pressing festivals.
Girona
Easter processions have been
a tradition in Girona ever since
1566. Starting close to the ca-
thedral on Good Friday at 10pm
it continues all through the Old
Town. Suffering and Death, ac-

Vêtus de soieries précieuses ils
ouvraient les processions, qui à
l’époque, représentaient tout à
fait l’esprit de l’inquisition.
Ces manifestations étaient cen-
sées convaincre les croyants
déviants. On espérait les rame-
ner ainsi dans le droit chemin de
l’église. De nos jours, la semaine
sainte espagnole, est célébrée en
de nombreuses endroits comme
une fête populaire à caractère re-
ligieux. Elle débute le Dimanche
des Rameaux et se termine dans
la nuit du samedi au dimanche
de Pâques.
Dans la procession et dans
les spectacles, les traditions
païennes fêtant l’arrivée du prin-
temps, se mêlent aux larmes pleu-
rant la mort de Jésus et à la joie
de sa résurrection.
