Splash! - this must have been a
particularly large frog, I think. I
turn towards the “black hole” – it was
a turtle, not a frog! For a few seconds
I can still see its shell before it disap-
pears completely under the duckweed.
After a short while it comes back to the
surface for breathing, but only with the
head out of the water, not even cutting
through the surface tension. It looks at
me – and I keep taking photos.
All of a sudden I hear the typical call of
one of our most colourful birds, the bee-
eater. They are back from Africa. Now
one can observe their elegant flight as
they are searching for western-oriented
sandy areas where they can dig their
breeding burrows of approximately 1
m length. Not the kind of accommoda-
tion I would prefer, so dark and cold.
But there are more strange things about
these beautiful birds: they feed on flying
insects, especially bees and wasps.
Prey is caught either while in conti-
nuous flight or more commonly from
an exposed perch where the bee-eater
watches for prey. Once having caught
larger prey with their long, curved bill
they return it to the perch and beat the
prey against it in order to kill and break
it up – something you can even hear.
In the breeding season the male bee-
eaters constantly present the females
with bees, until they are ready to mate.

Elle me re-
garde.
