Wer Abwechslung sucht und Lust auf urbanes Feeling - zumindest im Kleinformat - hat, der sollte das charmante Städtchen Figueres mal ge- nauer unter die Lupe nehmen. Die entspannte Atmosphäre lädt zu einem gemütlichen Stadtbummel ein - wobei das Portemonnaie aber sicher nicht lange in der Tasche bleibt. Von kleinen, stilvollen Boutiquen bis hin zu größeren, bekannten Modeketten - die Kleinstadt bietet so einiges an Einkaufsmöglichkeiten.
Aber auch historisch gesehen, gibt Figueres was her. Auf einem Plateau nordwestlich der Stadt, ragt das eindrucksvolle „Castell de Sant Ferran“ majestätisch über Figueres. Als größte Festung Europas des 18. Jahr- hunderts zieht das Bauwerk täglich Geschichtsbegeisterte an. Und das zurecht! Das enorme Areal, das während des Spanischen Bürgerkriegs als Munitionslager und Depot für Kunstwerke und später als Militärausbil- dungsstätte verwendet wurde, bietet neben gut erhaltenen Innenhöfen und Zisternen auch eine eindrucksvolle Aussicht über die Dächer der Stadt. Der kleine Marsch auf den Festungshügel lohnt sich also auf jeden Fall! Auch an Kulinarischem fehlt es der Stadt nicht. Wer in besonders schönem Ambiente essen möchte, sucht sich am besten eines der Restaurants nahe der Església Sant Pere und beobachtet entspannt das Treiben der Stadt. Aber nun zu einem Mann, der Figueres’ Bekanntheitsgrad erheblich an- steigen ließ und dem die Stadt ihr künstlerisches Flair zu verdanken hat . Ja, ihr habt richtig geraten: Salvador Dalí! For those who are looking for a bit of variety and urban feeling - even if it’s just on a small scale - should give the charming town Figueres a go. The relaxing atmosphere is perfect for a stroll through the town and some window-shopping - I’m sure your wallet won’t stay put for long!
From charming, classy boutiques to bigger fashion chains - Figueres has it all. The town even offers attractions from a historical point of view. Situated on a hill north-west of Figueres, the impressive „Castell de Sant Ferran“ towers majestically above the town. Known as the biggest fortress of 18th century Europe, the Castell attracts history lovers on a daily basis. The gigantic area that was used as an ammunition store and depot for artwork and later on as military training centre, offers - apart from well-preserved inner courtyards and cisterns - a sensational view over the town. The short walk up the fortress hill is de nitely worth it!
Figueres also has a range of culinary treasures to offer to its visitors. For those who are looking for restaurants in a beautiful ambiance, the square in front of the town’s church is the place to be. Lean back and watch the colorful life of the city.
But now moving on to a man who gave Figueres its artistic air and made the town known around the world. Yes, you guessed right: Salvador Dalí! Because what would be an article about Figueres without mentioning Cata- lonia’s most prestigious artist? Exactly: simply incomplete and not capturing the town’s character.
